Now, to be clear, it’s hypothetically possible to use a Kindle without an Amazon account…you can get and use books (and music and such) from other sources, but I would guess it’s a tiny, tiny amount of people that do it that way. In this case, an Amazon account is the road…it’s that whole wide world of experiences you can have with your Kindle. You can think of it like…sitting in a new car in the dealer’s showroom, or taking it out on the road.
However, it’s using it with Amazon that really makes it come alive. When you buy (or are given) a Kindle, that’s a piece of hardware. I get lots of questions (which I love, by the way) and see even more other places, and the idea of how your Kindle relates to an Amazon account may be one of the biggest sources of confusion. To rename a device, select the device and then click the “Edit” link to the right of the current device name. Kindle apps on your phone, tablet, and computer don’t have that ability, though, so you’ll have to use Amazon’s site. You can rename actual Kindle devices from the device itself, so that may be a better option if you’re unsure which device is which. The first step to organizing your devices is to give them better names. One way to determine which device is which is to send something simple, like a JPG or GIF image file, to the address and then see which device it shows up on. Each device gets its own email address so you can send it certain types of documents–like Word documents, PDFs, some ebook formats, and image files. Instead, note the email address listed under a device when you select it. If you can’t tell which device is which, there’s no super easy way to identify them. This tab shows all Kindle-related devices you have registered to the account, whether those are actual Kindles, kindle apps installed on other devices, or even the Kindle Cloud Reader.
